Anytime you break ice, there is some pressure exerted. It may come from warmth that tears away at the thickness until it comes apart. It may be caused by some crunching blow that scatters it into pieces, or it may be picked away, just a chunk at a time.
How could this type discussion be used for a sermonette? The fact is, all of us become involved in some icy situations from time to time. Unless the ice is broken between two individuals, they will continue to have “cool” feelings, one toward another. Even in group situations a “cool” situation can develop, and it becomes important to “break the ice.”
Jesus gave us perfect information for breaking icy relationships. He said such things as, “Forgive unto seventy times seven,” “Love one another, even as I have loved you,” “If a man compels you to go one mile, go with him two,” and “Do unto others, as you would have others do unto you.” If you can begin to apply these teachings of Jesus and other things that he taught, you will begin to see the ice warm up and eventually disappear in your relationship with others.
In some cases, the ice is so hard and so big that it takes time plus warmth to really make much difference. If we can pick away at it by “loving our enemies,” by “doing good unto them that despitefully use us and persecute us, and who say all manner of evil against us, falsely,” then we will be “overcoming evil with good.”
The greatest ice crusher in the history of man was the cross of Jesus Christ. That one act on the part of God has crushed the icy hearts of everyone who would call upon the name of Jesus. There is still hope for your icy situations if you can bring them to the greatest ice crusher in all of history, even Jesus Christ.
